about

This is one of three songs that started it all for me back in 1999, when I was a Juneau teenager just beginning to realize that most adults don't really have it together. Cinderella was a natural fit because I've always enjoyed dismantling romantic stereotypes of fairy tale characters.

lyrics

1. CINDERELLA
Words and music copyright 1999 Britt Arnesen

I think I told you once I was sorry
You told me that wasn't good enough
Silent accusations and hateful allegations
I know I left the lights on

Just give me a chance and I'll show you who I am
I'm as stale as the cookies on your plate
And dead as the crazy ideas in my head
Why does coffee take so long to make?

Cinderella pretends that it's alright
She cleans the house but she don't clean her mind
Cinderella cries herself to sleep
Tomorrow she'll drink some caffeine

Cinderella complex, my fairy's unresponsive
I'm drowning in the ashes of my dreams
Codependent and neurotic, I need my dose of promise
Who said addiction wasn't right?
Prince charming slays his dragons and I just sit here waiting
For someone to come and resuce me

Cinderella pretends that it's alright
She cleans the house but she don't clean her mind
Cinderella cries herself to sleep
Tomorrow she'll drink some caffeine

Each day I swear the sun gets fainter
I wonder why it doesn't disappear
Hidden from the light I can't tell my left from right
And you never seem to come to comfort me
Is it just my imagination, is loneliness contagious?
I need to know I'm not the only one.

Cinderella pretends that it's alright
She cleans the house but she don't clean her mind
Cinderella cries herself to sleep
Tomorrow she'll drink some caffeine
