Elijah Jalil is a singer-songwriter based in Missoula, Montana. Originally from the Bay Area (CA), Elijah made his way towards the mountains after studying theater in Portland, OR to work on his Masters of Fine Arts in Acting at the University of Montana. He is a dedicated social justice artist focused on changing the world by creating and collaborating on all forms of art.
Largely inspired by Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul, and other Pop genres, Elijah started his journey with a guitar and his voice. After playing at multiple open mics around Missoula, the consistently magical collaboration with Britt Arnesen helped this debut album, Nothing to Say, come to life.
lyrics
7. NOTHING TO SAY
Words and music by Elijah Jalil
I've got nothing to say, nothing to say, nothing to say (listen to me)
I've got nothing to say, nothing to say, nothing to say (are you still with me?)
I've got nothing to say, nothing to say, nothing to say (go away please)
I've got nothing to say, nothing...
Oh you're still with me?
Well you gone have to wait,
Okay?
Cuz I'm not ready...
Imma take my time, imma take my time, imma take my time
Listen,
I know you're not worried
Not worried about money
'Cause you've always got it from me
But trust me, I'm hustling every day just so you don't see me struggling
You will not be struggling
The life you've lived, or even living,
don't come cheap everything cost something
You're living in a world where you gotta be 3 steps ahead to be 1 step ahead
1 to be down,
2 to catch up,
and 3 before you're noticed but you better not act up
Give ‘em no reason to bring you down to their level
They can't wait to see you fail, so please don't settle
I don't call you son ‘cause you shine. I call you son ‘cause you're mine, yeah.
I don't call you son ‘cause you shine. I call you son ‘cause you're mine, yeah.
Well, here we go again
I said, here we go again
I'm a black wave
living in a white sea
always seen and unseen…
And I ain’t no a rapper, but I'm gonna rap to ya,
cuz there's something on my mind I gotta share with my people
Give em what they want E,
Show em that you're black (ah)
like them other porch monkeys
Give em what they want E,
Show em that you're black (ah)
like them other porch monkeys
Okay okay okay okay okay, I lied
I said I’m not a rapper, sometimes I like to hide
Behind my own eyes, disguised within the whites and browns
If they’re around, then I’d like to say hi
Hello, I’m losing my mind
I say that I’m fine, but I’m probably high just to get by
I think I’ve said too much and I would stop, uh
But I’m not quite done
It’s not enough, it’s not enough
This life shit is rough,
It’s even tougher when these white folx, say “nigga!”
You think it’s foreign,
but it’s obvious that they been born with it in they bones
They prolly practice and shit and they homes, huh
I don’t know, I’m just guessing,
But it sound right, don’t it
I had a dream I won an Oscar
and I said, I don’t want it
I don’t know, I’m just guessing,
But it sound right, don’t it
I had a dream I won an Oscar…
I've got nothing to say, nothing to say, nothing to say (listen to me)
I've got nothing to say, nothing to say, nothing to say (are you still with me?)
I've got nothing to say, nothing to say, nothing to say (go away please)
I've got nothing to say, nothing...
Oh you're still with me?
Well, here we go again
I said, here we go again
I wanna tell you what I'm thinking, but I can't find the words.
I can't find the words, I can't find the courage
I wanna tell you what I'm thinking, but I can't find the words,
I can't find the words, I can't find the courage
Britt K. Arnesen is a Montana folksinger, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. She plays in the longtime Missoula band Pinegrass. Britt is originally from Juneau, Alaska.
I never get sick of listening. Courtney is an amazing writer. Her lyrics don't waste a single word. She could carry this whole EP with just the strength of her voice & guitar, but her band rocks too! Britt Arnesen
Missoula songwriters Maria Zepeda and Elijah Jalil have made absolute magic. I was honored to be in the room when this music was laid down by these fine old souls. It is my new favorite album! Britt Arnesen
