about

I grew up in Juneau, Alaska and spent a lot of time on boats. I love the sea and the shore and the maritime music tradition. In this dark story, ghosts warn our protagonist that her life is in grave danger. Her husband the captain has uncovered her infidelity and plots to kill her. While he's asleep might be her only chance to hop on that dinghy and row away. Which is more dangerous, his murderous rage or the stormy sea and its rocky islands?

lyrics

ROW AWAY
words and music by Britt K. Arnesen

Row away never look behind you
Row away never let him find you
Row away

Sea foam green floating past the buoy
Hauled out seals barking at you moon you
Should have stayed out there on the deck you
Should have kept your mouth all sealed up
You took a chance oh and how you stumbled
The evidence ringing in his ears

Row away...

Your trusted mate the very one you lied to
Lies awake plotting your demise with
Every wave banging on the sideboards
Ghosts of yore running for their lives and
Clanging bells sounding out a warning
You know better than to ignore them

Row away...

Train your eyes on every new horizon
The storm will break a new one will arrive he
Carved your name on every rocky island
Said one day you'll run aground and die there
Your lover's gaze will punch him in the eye when
He hears tale that you're not returning

Row away...

There's no rest in this pursuit
When vengeance wins you're the loser
There's no love like the one that is denied you
There's no pain like leaving it behind you
Ah but fate always has it in for
The wife of every salty sailor

Row away.

Recorded February 2018 by Britt Arnesen in Missoula, Montana.

Britt is playing an 1891 Martin parlor guitar, size 2 1/2 style 17 (thanks, Kim Rice) and a 1942 Kay Bass, tuned to the standard of A = 432.

Thanks to the many talented Irish session players in Missoula. I wrote this song one dark winter night after listening to the session at Sean Kelly's over some great Indian food. Also, kudos to my folk music hero Gordon Bok for setting a bar I can aspire to!
