about

I started this song in spring 2002 but couldn't get anywhere because I lacked wisdom. It took a few times stuck in the mud on the hard broken road for this waltz to start marching in winter 2008-2009.

lyrics

11. SLIGHTLY DOWN
Words and music copyright 2009 by Britt Arnesen

Mama sits taking coffee sips at the window
While the water drips from the leaking roof into her buckets
Potatoes for breakfast, nothing for lunch, potato supper
If the sun is shining somewhere, it's in someone else's window

But our mama's not scared 'cause she's well aware
She told us a hundred times that life isn't fair
There's no point in worrying all the way to despair
When God's grace, his love is always near

She's just slightly down
Only slightly down
She's just slightly down
From hanging around the wrong side of this town

On the way to town mama's heavy load: a truck full of children
Its a bumpy road, a wet and muddy road, it's spring here
If it weren't for your love
She'd be stuck in the mud, she'd be dirty
When she didn't know your love
She'd been pushed she'd been shoved
She was hurting

Still Mama's not scared, she's well aware
She's told us a thousand times that life isn't fair
There's no point in worrying all the way to despair
Because God's grace and love will always prevail

We're just slightly down
Only slightly down
Never more than just slightly down
It's a hard broken road but we don't have to go it alone

Now Mama's getting old, us children all grown, she keeps the lights low
Me, I live alone, I keep losing my phone, I drive a school bus

You know I'm not scared, I'm well aware
Mama told me a million times that life isn't fair
There's no point in worrying all the way to despair
Because God's love and grace is always there

Still I'm just slightly down
No more than slightly down
Never more than slightly down
It's a hard broken road but I don't have to go it alone
