words and music by Britt Arnesen

Tempest on the great seaborders G- D G-
Hear my tale, ye viking sworders Bb D
Winter smites us, wild winds crying G- C-
Set the salty billows flying G- C-
Wind and winter, fierce marauders G- C- D G-

God’s vast host of shouting water
Comes against us charged with slaughter
None can tell the dread and wonder
Speaking in the ocean thunder
And the tempest, thunder’s daughter

Feel the wind of east at morning
Jealous hearts of waves yearning
Westward over wasted ocean
’Til they stay in eager motion
Where the setting sun is burning

Western wind starts blowing
O’er the current wildly rolling
Eastward sets a fiery longing
And the waves go eastward, thronging
Far to find the sun-tree growing

Northern wind come flying
Freeze your tears right where you cried them
Ice and nails a hammer driven
To the shining southern heaven
Wave to wave in song replying

Southern wind comes raining Bb F Eb
Only by grace will I see the morning Bb D
Keep the ones I left behind me Eb F
Safe within your arms of mercy Eb F
Tell my love I'll always miss her Eb F Eb

At the mouth of each dark river
Breaking waters surge and shiver
Wind and winter met together
My demise it’s only ending
Paying for the deeds I’ve done here

Full the sea and fierce the surges
Lovely are the ocean verges
On the showery waters whirling
Sandy winds are swiftly swirling
Rudders cleave the surf that urges

High round my life’s cliffs and messes
Hard the strife not soft the stresses
Swan a feather softly sifting
Snow upon my boat is drifting
Icicles and angry tresses

Son of God, great Lord of wonder
Save me from the ravening thunder
By the feast before thy dying
Save me from the tempest crying
And from Hell, the tempest under
