about

Special and beautiful things happen at 40 below. Black spruce get up and walk around at night under the aurora. While the sun is resting, the moon picks up the slack. It really does pop and crackle in the air when you toss a pot of boiling water. Although winter lasts from October to April in Fairbanks, all of these cool things make it entirely tolerable, even magical.

lyrics

7. WINTER SONG
Words and music copyright 2001 by Britt Arnesen

Fresh dusting of snow
the night's aglow and I'm in the only
car on the road.
My heater's broke
and the windows won't close
but I've only
a few miles to go
through the glowing snow.
Another winter alone.

But when the moon is bright
I don't even need my
headlights, though I leave them on.
It's the safest thing to do.
I'm going to make it through.
Make it through
Make it through
The spring is coming soon.

I know a guy, they amputated his toe
because he didn't know
it would get so cold the boiling water you throw
at 40 below will spit
crackle in the air.
So take note and prepare:
don't leave your skin so bare.
He said the winter don't care;
she'll just freeze you right there.

But when the moon is bright
I don't even need my
headlights, though I leave them on.
It's the safest thing to do.
I'm going to make it through.
Make it through.
The snow is gone in June
Snow is gone in June.

When the moon is bright
I don't even need my
headlights, though I leave them on.
It's the safest thing to do.
I'm going to shine on through.
